Voluntourism

No one who takes part in one of the voluntourism projects is quite the same afterwards!

Tucano Peru has been connecting travellers to locals, at all levels, for many years and leads the way in providing holidays that enable travellers to tackle the environmental and social issues in Peru. So, if you or your clients are looking for an eye-opening, unique travel experience which will also contribute to the development of a rural village, Tucano Peru has the perfect option. For the past three years, we have been running ‘voluntourism’ projects in traditional and spectacular Andean communities, where ‘voluntravellers’ have the chance to experience the age-old traditions of music, dance, textiles and working the land, while also working together with the Quechua-speaking locals on a variety of projects.

There are some very tangible benefits to the local communities:

Building projects that leave behind renovated houses, playgrounds, classrooms and sanitation. Health assistance, in the form of check-ups and treatment from qualified professionals.Financial and material support, as the visitors spend their money at local shops and leave behind surplus equipment.

Less tangible, but equally important, is the emotional boost these oft-neglected villages receive with the arrival of a group of interested foreigners, keen to help and learn.   Happily, this is a two-way process, as the voluntravellers make friends with the hospitable villagers – especially the naturally-friendly and curious children – while developing new skills and an appreciation of a wildly different world view.
